Course Description

Bad habits under gird many chronic disease conditions, and are difficult for our patients and clients to change. As we sift through the various layers of habits at work, eventually we find that will-power, or self-control isn’t strong enough to get them through the tough places, where temptations are the strongest. This course focuses, specifically on self-control, and provides a tool box of suggestions for supplying the patient/client with more options. It is a stand alone course, but builds on the information provided in our other two habits courses: Stuck in a Rut, and Supporting Habit Change.

Purpose and Objectives

At the completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Consider the process of learning self-control in early childhood.
  • Understand how willpower weakens and why it often fails.
  • Consider the effect of beliefs about will power.
  • Recognize what assets are used by those who are successful at changing habitual behaviors.
  • Identify various “tools” of self-control.
  • Fine-tune the patient’s/client’s goal setting process, to make goals that supply motivation.
  • Help the patient/client form details plans to carry them through common temptations.
  • Help the patient/client to hold and live their new story.

About the Author

Linda S. Greenfield, RN, PhD

Linda is the educational administrator, author and instructor for Consultants for the Future. She is a graduate from Iowa State University and Columbia Pacific University and was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities as a doctorial student. She has taught hundreds of seminars and authored home study courses for over thirty five years in healthcare continuing education.

Her clinical experiences include acute and long term care, including experience as a flight nurse in the US Air Force and as an educator in a college based nursing program. Linda has a passion for life-long learning and is always on the breaking edge of the latest information in health and healing, integrating both conventional and alternative approaches. She has a knack for breaking down complex topics into easy to understand concepts with practical applications for everyday needs. Linda has been honored as a keynote speaker at several conferences and conventions, including the Spring 2005 conference of the Iowa Department of Health where she spoke about energy healing.
