The evolution of participant-physician communication is slow and is hampered with multiple stresses within the healthcare system, but it is evolving because the players involved are evolving. This course will help you understand the process. It will increase your power and your ability to effectively communicate in even the most difficult situations.
Purpose and Objectives
This course studies aspects of communication blocks between the healthcare worker and the physician. At the conclusion of the course you will be able to:
- Relate the historical oppression of women and to non-physician healthcare workers to the emerging role shifts and changes in communication as workers become empowered.
- Explore today’s external forces that are shaping participant-physician relationships and styles of communication.
- Identify aspects of male versus female communication patterns that can impede or foster effective negotiations.
- Recognize ways to defuse anger, belittling, or defensive turf wars.
- Review steps to enhance your ability to remain assertive in stressful communication situations.
