This course is a companion course to Stuck In A Rut. This first course focuses on how habits work in our brain. We suggest that you study that course first. However, Supporting A Habit Change has been created to stand alone, if you prefer. The focus of this course is application. How do we build our understanding of the nature of habits, into our approaches to help a patient/client make significant and difficult changes that stick?
Purpose and Objectives
Bad habits, by their very nature, are difficult to change. But as the result of recent research that is generating improved approaches, greater patient/client preparation, and more cultural support, the rates of success increase, and more people can enjoy the quality of life they work so hard to achieve. Each of us, in our various professions, can be instrumental in the process. This course offers specific approaches that assist patients/clients through the five stages of habit change. It offers examples from common scenarios encountered by each profession taking this course. It emphasizes that mobility, speech, activities of daily living, dietary choices, thought patterns and more, are all automatic habitual patterns.
- Identify how the habitual brain functions automatically, rapidly, and unconsciously to carry us through our daily tasks.
- Recognize that there are stages to the process of change.
- Assess and intervene effectively with a patient in the Pre-Contemplation Stage.
- Assess and intervene effectively with a patient in the Contemplation Stage.
- Assess and intervene effectively with a patient in the Preparation Stage.
- Assess and intervene effectively with a patient in the Action Stage.
- Assess and intervene effectively with a patient in the Maintenance Stage.
- Consider the possibility and brain processes necessary to reach the Termination Stage.
- Consider the impact of bad health habits on our society, and the need for growing attention to the development of healthy habits.
