Course Description

We make our choices based upon the available information we receive. Thinking, memory and attitude operate on two levels: the conscious/deliberate and the unconscious/automatic. “Dual processing,” researchers call it. The purpose of this course is to examine physiologic explanations for intuition and identify ways to become more aware of how to facilitate accessing non-conscious information. Increased understanding of underlying processes can foster greater efficiency, accuracy and safety when combining intuition with conscious cognitive processes.

Purpose and Objectives

    • Define intuition, and consider its role in information retrieval.

    • Consider the process of intuition as it applies to implicit learning.

    • Consider the process of intuition as it applies to empathetic information.

    • Consider the process of increased awareness as vital for accurate intuition.

    • Become aware of a strategy to combine intuition with cognition in order to gain information to help another person.

    • Apply this course information to a variety of patient/client situations, such as when working with confused patients, intellectually disabled patients, clients with language impairments, emotionallytroubled patients, etc.
