Course Description

Despite our healthcare system’s focus on technology and curing of the physical body, healing involves the mind, body and spirit as well. Your ability to listen, console, and nurture those involved in loss and changing personal identity greatly impacts the healing process.

Purpose and Objectives

This course provides specific listening tools to enhance your ability to guide a patient through the maze of his confused emotions and pain. At the conclusion of the course you will be able to:

    • Review common stages of stress and loss, and recognize individual expressions of the process.

    • Recognize the positive value of emotions and be able to help the patient use his emotions to heal.

    • Identify at least five attributes of therapeutic communication.

    • Cite characteristics of the thinking, feeling, physical and symbolic domains and be able to move a patient’s conversation to a therapeutic domain.

  • Recognize statements of generalizations, deletions, and distortions that are limiting the patient’s perception and help him expand his options
