Course Description

End of life care refers to the final weeks of life when death is imminent and unavoidable. In recent years we have witnessed fierce public debates on the subject of death and dying. Studies have supported the need to better address the care of the dying patient. This course discusses the controversies, and presents approaches to meet psychological and physical needs encountered in the dying patient, while empowering the patient.

Purpose and Objectives

    • Differentiate between chronic care, palliative care and hospice care.

    • Intervene appropriately to provide terminal comfort care for a patient and his family in the last days of life.

    • Correctly define DNR and identify three levels that can be offered.

    • Identify situations in which the concept of patient autonomy does not apply and the doctor may make the decisions.

    • Correctly define euthanasia, and the differing levels.

    • Examine sections of the Patient’s Bill of Rights that support the patient’s autonomy in end-of-life care decisions.

    • Identify approaches that can help support a patient’s capacity to make health care decisions.

  • Review the legal aspects of advance directives.
